Samuel L. Waltz Jr.

Sam Waltz is an early-retired DuPont Co. External Affairs senior executive who has worked in business for over 30 years, and he has taught business, marketing and organizational development as an Adjunct Faculty for almost that long. A native of East Central Illinois farm country, he is a Vietnam-era veteran of US Army CounterIntelligence.  The Wilmington (DE) News Journal in 1975 brought him to Delaware, where he became the paper’s State Capitol Bureau Chief covering the Governor, the Delaware General Assembly and (now) Vice President Biden.  In his Corporate career with DuPont, he worked across virtually all its strategic business units and directly for one of its CEOs.  He founded Sam Waltz & Associates LLC Business & Communications Counsel in 1993, and he affiliated RLS Associates in 2004-05.  A generalist in business, Sam Waltz has worked across almost every industry, from chemicals and plastics to life sciences and health care to professional services and financial services to manufacturing to “cleantech” and emerging technologies.  Elected to serve in 1999 as the global and national President and Chairman, Board of Directors, of his professional society, the Public Relations Society of America, which also elected him to the unique honor Fellow PRSA, he is an active leader in a variety of professional, civic and faith-based organizations in the MidAtlantic.  He chaired Delaware’s Delegation to the White House Conference on Small Business, and, for more than a decade, he chaired the Delaware Leadership Council of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).  He holds BS and MS degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with PhD coursework in Public Policy at the University of Delaware.  He has spoken in more than 35 states and 3 foreign countries and has visited both the White House and Buckingham Palace for work.  Among topics on which he speaks are (a) Getting Your Money’s Worth: A Guide to Business Valuation, (b) Growing Your Business and What to Do with When You’ve Grown It, (c) Strategic Business Development, and (d) MindMapping Your Life: Six Ways to Navigate Change and Create the Life You Really Want. Given his passions for Baseball and Civil War History, he also speaks (e) Lincoln on Leadership: How the Man He Was Helped Him Win the War and (f) Baseball and Americana: Lessons for Life.  In 2000, he won the business communications industry’s highest award, the PRSA Silver Anvil for NonProfit Public Affairs, for his Campaign to Vindicate the Scapegoated 1941 Pearl Harbor Commanders Adm. Kimmel & Gen. Short, a campaign that generated three successful votes in Congress.  Members of Wilmington’s University & Whist Club, Sam and his wife Sandra L. Bihary Waltz live in Greenville, DE.
